Perry was born in Chicago to the actors Laurie Metcalf and Jeff Perry. In the ABC sitcom Roseanne (as as seen through flashback) her mother portrayed Jackie Harris in two of Perry's initial TV roles. However, her parents did not allow her to act until she reached the age of adulthood, for fear of the effects stress would be able to have on their daughter. Perry stated she felt shy to act in high school but began acting in the theater at Northwestern University as a way to make friends after transferring to the university from Boston University. Perry following her graduation from Boston University, moved in New York in search of acting roles on television. Her small part was on TV shows like Law & Order: Criminal Intent. Then, homelessness brought her back to California in search of theater jobs. In 2013, she was a part of The Other Place on Broadway along with her mother. The father of her Kevin McKidd performed in Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prize-winning drama Anna Christie with her in 2015. In 2016, Perry appeared on nine episodes of ABC's crime thriller The Family. Her father portrayed her in her role on the ABC Drama Scandal. The actress was also featured on her role on the CBS sitcom The Big Bang Theory spinoff Young Sheldon as a version younger Mary Cooper, Sheldon Cooper's mom. The character was picked via auditions the fact that she had a deep relationship with the show.
